Ramadan: The Month of Love*

Al hamdulillaahi rabbil a'aalameen was salaatu was salaamu a'ala ashrifil anbiyaai wa al mursaleen nabeeyina Mohammad wa aala aalihi wa sahbihee ajmaaeen.

Amma Ba'ad:

To many of you reading this the title may seem absurd, and may have even caught you off-guard, as love generally is not associated with the month of worship and blessing. Yet, if we were to contemplate the actions that we partake during this blessed month we would see that the vast majority of them revolve around love, we are often people that just fail to reflect.

The first thing that is needed to actually conceptualize where I am coming from would be to understand what love really is, or at the very least how it is being defined in this treatise. We all know that love has many manifestations, degrees, and types[1]. The way a child loves his or her parents is not the same as the way a woman may love her husband, and likewise, the way a person may love chocolate, per se, is not the same way a person would love his or her Lord (or at least we hope not). However in all of these types of love there is a common and key theme, that of sacrifice and fulfillment. The more we love something, the more we are willing to sacrifice for it, and the more we will strive to fulfill the every command and wish of our beloved. This should not be misunderstood as sacrifice and fulfillment being the only components of love, but rather they are from amongst the essential components that make up love, along with longing and cherishing. And this is why we should see that love, along with hope and fear, is a pillar of our worship[2]. Our worship will not be complete nor acceptable until it encompasses the right amounts of love, hope, and fear. After having comprehended this, we can see how shirk[3] can be performed even in love[4][5], yet most of mankind knows not.

If we were to take just a moment to reflect what Islam means linguistically (let alone conventionally), we would see that submission (the true linguistic definition of Islam, and not peace contrary to common belief), entails a common theme with love and that being sacrifice. When we truly submit to Allaah we are willing to sacrifice anything and everything for Him. This can be seen in one of the most fundamental mottos of a Muslim:

"Say: Indeed my prayer, and my sacrifice, and my living, and my dying are for none other than Allaah, Lord of all that exists." [6]

So when one goes about sacrificing and fulfilling the wants of other than Allaah, just as much or, more than what he does for Allaah then such an individual has fallen into shirk. And if one fails to meet the necessary sacrifices and falls short in fulfilling the required obligations then such an individual has fallen into disbelief. It is in light of these words that we understand the verse:

"From mankind are those people who have taken andaadan (deities) other than Allaah, they love them as they love Allaah, and those who have eemaan (i.e. are muslims) are stronger in their love for Allaah."[7]

We are now beginning to get a clearer picture of how love is associated with this blessed month. It is a woman's love for her child and husband that will make her wake up in the late hours of the night to prepare a nice meal for suhoor (the pre-dawn meal). It is a man's love for his community that will drive him to take time off of work to ensure his fellow Muslims have sufficient food for iftaar (the meal at sunset). And it is our love for Allaah, as Muslims, which drives us to sacrifice the two pinnacles of desire[8], food and marital relations, for no other reason than the pleasure of our very Creator.

Our love for Allaah (glorified and praised is He) does not stop here but, rather, merely just begins. One of the key pillars of loving Allaah lies in following the Prophet Mohammad (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)[9], and an exemplary role model he is, as can be seen by Allaah's statement:

"Say (O Mohammad to the people): 'If you really love Allaah, then follow me. And He (Allaah) in return will love you, and will forgive you for you sins, and indeed Allaah is oft-forgiving and most merciful.' Say: 'Obey Allaah and the Messenger', and if they turn away, then verily Allaah does not love the disbelievers."[10]

So what are some of the traditions that we have been left with to follow?

1- Waking up to have suhoor, even if it is something little.

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Eat suhoor for in suhoor there is blessing."[11]

2- Not delaying the iftaar.

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "The people will remain upon goodness as long as they hasten in breaking their fasts"[12]

3- Supplicating throughout the day and night, especially during iftaar time.

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Three prayers are not rejected: the prayer of a father, the prayer of a fasting person, and the prayer of a traveler."[13]

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Indeed there is for the fasting person, when he breaks his fast, a supplication which is not rejected".[14]

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) used to say upon breaking his fast: "Dhahaba al-adhamaa wa abtallat al-aa urooq wa thabata al-ajr in sha Allaah"[15] (the thirst is gone, the veins have been moistened and the reward is assured, if Allaah wills).

'Aaishah (May Allaah be pleased with her) reported that Allaah's messenger (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) instructed her to say:

"Allaahumma innaka 'affoowun tuhibbul 'afwa fa'foo 'annee"[16] (O Allaah indeed you are one that pardons, and you love to pardon, so pardon me)

4- Spending the nights in prayer, as well as encouraging the family to do so.

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Whoever stands in prayer with the imaam until its conclusion, will be like the one who prayed the whole night"[17]

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Whoever establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allaah's rewards, all his past sins will be forgiven.[18]

'Aaishah (May Allaah be pleased with her) narrated that the messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) used to spend the whole night in prayer, and used to awake his family to do so as well. [19]]

5- Being generous and feeding the people iftaar.

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Whoever gives iftaar to one who is fasting will have a reward like his, without detracting from the reward of the person fasting” [20]

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) has been described as: "Being the most generous of people, and he was at his most generous during Ramadhaan"[21]

6- Staying away from all immoral acts, especially those of the tongue.

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Fasting is not abstaining from eating and drinking alone, but it is also abstaining from vain speech and foul language. If one of you is being cursed or annoyed, he should say: "I am fasting, I am fasting." [22]

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Allaah does not need the fast of the one who does not abandon falsehood in speech or in action" [23]

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said: "Perhaps a fasting person will get nothing from his fast except hunger, and perhaps the one who stands to pray at night will get nothing from his prayer except tiredness."[24]

7- Performing 'Umrah (the minor pilgrimage).

The Messenger of Allaah (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said:"Perform 'Umrah when Ramadan comes, for 'Umrah in Ramadan is equal to Hajj (in reward).[25]

Like all things in life, this treatise has come to an end. But prior to concluding it is only befitting that we be reminded of a plague that lies in the hearts and minds of many Muslims today. And that is one of affirming words but not affirming their respective meanings. [26] How often do we hear Muslims cry and shout of their love of Allaah, yet it is a love that has no meaning as their actions show likewise. This is something that Allaah (glorified and praised is He) warns us of Himself when He says:

"O you who believe, why do you say that which you do not do? Most hateful to Allaah is that you should say that which you do not do."[27]

As Muslims we are to be people whose actions speak louder than their words. If we truly love Allaah then we need to show it with our actions. As everyone claims love but very few go about proving it.

Lastly, it is not hidden from anyone that indeed Ramadan is a month of blessings. In it everything is blessed from, our food to our actions. It is in this very month that we should plant the seeds for goodness that we hope will last us throughout the year. It was the Prophet (Salla Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) who said:

"The best of deeds are the most consistent of them" [28]

So we should always be looking for self-improvement, and enrichment, and not just in Ramadan. At the end of the day we have enough "Ramadan Muslims", now we are in need of Muslims who live in Ramadan all year long.

Wallaahu ta'aalaa 'aalam.

With all the best wishes of a blessed, beneficial, benevolent, and fruitful Ramadan.

The Brutal Truth*

sighs.

i'm being posted to..

JURONG POLYCLINIC !

actually the reality hasn't quite set in yet. i'm still in the denial mode. posted to Jurong Polyclinic. can't be, right ? maybe they got me mixed up with a clone or something. someone who looks like me ? has the same father's name ? with the same ic number or something ? maybe someone's out to get me ? getting me posted to some ulu polyclinic ?!

bleargh. who am i kidding ? it's true, people. i'm gonna be posted at the other side of the country.

there goes my money on transportation.

on the up-side, i get to visit my grandmama every weekend ! or every alternate weekends, depending on my driving lessons.

only i have to endure the long bus rides to and fro. and being Ramadhan, music will not a be a daily companion. bummer.

oh well. either way, i'm thankful to the Almighty that i've finally landed myself a good-paying job.

i'm gonna miss the Springfielders !

ohyea here's a late birthday wish to Zaid. Happy Birthday, Grandpa ! :D Allah bless~!

Life As We Know It.*

it's been a long time since i actually blog something. blog as in blog blog la. heh.

now where shall i start ?

*stretches typing fingers*

ok firstly, i'm still relief teaching at Springfield Sec. but not for long, i guess. cos i found a job, baby~ GLORY TO ALLAH ALMIGHTY~ wooo~

yayness ! finally ! i've found a freaking job ! but there's one problem. i still have no freaking idea which polyclinic i'll be posted to. and their [NHG's] polyclinics are located at the North and West. *faints*

so it's either Jurong [oh God, please no], Clementi, Hougang, Toa Payoh, Ang Mo Kio and 4 other locations which i don't bother looking up. sighs. i hope i don't get those faraway places. i guess i'd still take the offer even if i'm posted to Jurong [ God forbid]. but Life, as we know it, won't let us off that easily. hopefully there's some kind of hikmah in it. i mean.. everything happens for a reason, right ? i'll leave it all to God, who knows better.

besides feeling super stoked that i've finally landed a job, i'm going to be super sad when it comes to leaving Springfield. i love the place la. heh. the students, teachers. it's the first work place that i feel welcomed. actually, it's my first workplace la. not counting the 3-day Expo job. HAHA. so yeaa, i'll miss you guys ! thanks for making me feel at home~ *feeling teary-eyed* haha. okok i was going heavy on the dramatics for a moment there. hee. but i'm still sad. and hope the students will work hard to achieve good results. all the best ok ! must stay in touch hor !

met Yasmin last Saturday to return her CD. it's been ages since i sat down and talked to her and we did just that. she's working at Toa Payoh Polyclinic, fyi. so yea hoping that i'd be posted there or somewhere there and it'll all be like SIP again. hee ! she's still the same person even though i haven't met her since our last day in school. she's got some cool new clothes too ! polka dot punjabi ! LOVE !! and she's got new handphone. ceyyyyybahhhhhhh ! Yas got new handphone sey ! tak ku sangka wahai sahabat ku yang tidak selalu gunakan talipon bimbit. hehe ! Samsung some more ! tak nak kalah ! hehe !

ohyea i sooo owe her a treat cos it's partly because of her that i got the job. hehe ! thankies Yas ! anything you want, man ! haha.

yea, it's nice to finally meet and catch up. maybe going to the movies with her this Saturday since she insisted. so yeaa. but i have no idea what movie to watch. i've seen The Devil Wears Prada and Monster House, which are both excellent by the way. i don't wanna watch Little Man cos it's just not appealing to me. i guess i'll leave to her to decide. hee.

annnnnnnnnd, met a few of my Lovelies on Sunday. namely Lut, Mus and Rad ! it was sort of a spontaneous thing. i miss them so much ! and the rest of course ! initially, we wanted to watch Ghost Game but it wasn't out yet. so went to Banquet to eat. after all that stomach-stuffing, walked all the way to Mus' house where we sat down at chit-chatted till around 9+. Rad left earlier cos she got work the next day. awwh. i'll be like that in a few weeks time. hehe.

i really enjoyed the time we spent talking about everything under the errr.. moonlight. heh. the talking, the teasing, the laughing. well.. the usual. and i never get tired of it. love it lar ! hehe. it's been a long time since we actually sat down and talked our hearts out. yes especially me, i admit that hehe. we'll do this again.. sooooooon ! hehe.

ohyea did you guys catch the 2-hr premiere of The Amazing Race 10 ? wow. this season promises a cultural adventure. not just the places, but the teams as well ! there's a pair of Korean jocks, an Indian couple and even a pair of Muslim guys, who promised to take 5 mins off the race to pray the 5 designated prayers. salute !

besides them, there's also a one-legged triathlete with her triathlete boyfriend, a father with his lesbian daughter and of course, the race will not be without a pair of gay men, two pairs of bimbos annnnnddd a pair of male eye-candies ! *GRINS*

also, the usual always-fighting couples and sisters. pfft. boring~ heh.

unfortunately, the pair of Muslims got a premature elimination (one of the few surprises this season, Phil claimed) and the sweet Indian couple got the axe in the 1st leg. awwwh. i was actually looking forward to supporting these two teams ! besides the cute boys of course. HEH. oh fyi, the cute boys are recovering drug addicts cum models. fuh~ drama.

so yea, hoping they'd win ! no, they're not like Eric and Jeremy. for one, they're way waaaaaaay cuter. heh. 2ndly, erm i think they're smarter. hah. besides them, i'll be rooting for the triathletes, father-lesbian duo and maybe the Koreans. if they stop being cocky, that is. heh.

till the next update.

much love, people ! :)

Muslim by Birth? Congratulations!*

NO, WAIT!

Many find consolation in, "We are born Muslims",
or "Thank God! He created us among Muslims." But
the Qur'an confers no value to Islam by
inheritance. It reads:

4:136 O You who have chosen to be graced with
belief! (and call yourselves Muslims)! Believe in
Allah and His Messenger, and the Book He has
revealed to His Messenger, and (the fact that He
revealed) the Scripture before. (Belief to the
point of Conviction can only be attained through
reason and not as a birth right 12:108).

12:108 Say (O Prophet), "This is my way. Resting
my call upon reason, I am calling you all to Allah
- I and they who follow me." (We do not invite
through blind faith, vague dogmas or by stunning
your intellect with miracles). "Glory to Allah! And
I am not one of those who ascribe divinity in any
form besides Him."

The Qur'an is so particular on using our intellect
and reason that it emphatically admonishes that
one should not accept even its own verses deaf and
blind [17:36, 25:73].

Muslims should stop here and think for a moment.
Have I ever tried to search for reality? Did I
really find the Truth? Or, am I simply imitating
the ways of my forefathers? It is only after due
contemplation that Islam can be adopted.

Unfortunately, today almost all the one billion
plus Muslims in the world are Muslims by birth and
by blind following, the kind of Islam which the
Qur'an considers of no merit. It has to be a
matter of choice based upon reason and understanding.

Reason and learning are like body and soul.
Without reason soul is empty wind.
Without learning body is a senseless frame.
(Kahlil Gibran, 1883-1931)

I Feel So Alive*

i almost got killed yesterday.

or at the very least, almost got hospitalised.

i was accompanying my Mum to the market and was waiting for the Green Man on the traffic light to appear. a few seconds before the it appears, my Mum wanted to cross the road. being the self-righteous person as i am, i told my Mum not to, and told her to wait till it appears.

when it finally did, this foreign worker, Mum and i started to cross. i was busy talking to my Mum (who was on my left) when suddenly, a taxi dashed in from the right ! bloody hell ! the driver narrowly missed me ! it's either he (and i) was so damn lucky not to hit me or he had a damn good judgement on my walking speed.

and he just drove on without looking back. sheeeesh !

i was so freaked out ! my Mum started complaining to the foreign worker next to her and they started taking down the plate number. i, on the other hand, kept thinking that if we were to cross the road a few seconds earlier, boom. gone.

so people, as a survivor of a possible tragedy, i am obliged to advice you not to take any yellow taxi with plate number:-

SHB
23ooY

or be careful around that taxi. the driver is mentally challenged.
